Headlines Thrills, chills, spills and more chills greet fans in Brainerd. By: Tim Boeder All The Dirt racing news 5-26-07 Brainerd, MN Cold rain and winds of over 40 miles per hour greeted fans and race teams alike Saturday night at the defending WISSOTA Track Of the Year. The race event got under way about a half hour late due to the track needing extra attention from all the rain that fell. The touring IRA 410 Sprint cars were making a special appearance, giving fans their first glimpse of the five nights of Sprint car action this summer at NCS. Kim Mock set the quick time for the night by rocketing around the 1/3 mile semi banked track at 13.616 seconds. That computed to an average speed of 99.148 miles per hour. The first race of the evening set the tone for what would be a very long and tough night for the track as well as the staff. As the first Pure Stock heat race was about to complete lap one, driver Dustin Joel was forced up into the retaining wall exiting turn four. His car climbed the wall and nearly rolled over. The car was a bit damaged and the driver was o.k., but the concrete barrier was badly broken and left a large and dangerous hole in the front straight wall. The track crew needed the help of a front end loader to replace the carnage. This caused a delay of 35 minutes to get the wall back to being safe for the drivers and the crowd. A few races later, a battle in the first heat of the 410 sprints left the guard rail along the infield ripped apart and also in need of the front end loader to make the needed safety repairs adding another 30minutes of delay to the program. With heat races finally in the books, and the crowd all bundled up to stay warm, the nights features were set to get under way. The NCS Pure Stocks were first to enter the track with Brad Nelson and Tim Otterness on the front row. Otterness gained the early advantage on the high side and lead the first two laps. Allen Brehmer then tucked his nose under the leader in turn one and edged ahead down the back stretch. Brehmer began pulling away to as much as a ten car length lead, but would see that lead erased on numerous occasions due to caution flags. On the final restart, Otterness turned up the heat on the leader and pulled even exiting turn two, but a small bobble in turn three was all Brehmer needed, as he ran a flawless last lap to secure his first ever feature win. The WISSOTA Super Stocks then moved trackside with Ed Jensen and Todd Walock leading a very stout field to the green flag. Jensen used the bottom to his advantage to lead the early laps. A caution for the stalled Jim Urseth on lap nine erased the nice lead Jensen had built, and allowed the rest of the field to bunch up behind him on the double file restart. Dave Mass and Butch Butcher used this to their advantage as Mass went high and Butcher low, leaving Jensen to be the meat of the sandwich and was pushed back to third. Ken Puckett, Tim Johnson, DJ Dondelinger, and Ryan Aho waged a war of their own in a battle for the fourth spot. As the laps wore down, so too did some of the equipment. As attrition began showing up and dropping race car parts on to the track. Each time bringing out the caution flag. The last one for a fourth running Tim Johnson who was called for losing a quarter panel and relegated to the rear of the field. With the 20 lap race cut by five, Mass managed to hold off Butcher after a green, white checkered finish for his second win of the season at North Central. Dan Gullickson managed to finish an impressive sixth after missing his heat race and starting last on the field for the feature. The IRA 410 sprints would be next, with Billy Hafemann and series point leader Steve Meyer making up the front row. Meyer looked to be shot out of a cannon and blasted to the lead in turn one. The rest of the field tried to find the right groove, but plenty of contact was made bringing out a series of 4 cautions before 2 official laps were scored. A spin by John Sernett bunched up the field yet again on lap five and allowed Billy Balog the opportunity to Chase the leader down. Meyer and Balog then put on a driving clinic of how to separate themselves from the field as they sliced and diced all over the track lapping cars at a furious pace. Meyer managed to mount a decent lead until the yellow flag waved yet again with two laps to go. As the field fired, Balog slipped just a bit allowing Meyer just cushion to escape Brainerd with the win and adding to his point lead. Travis Whitney, Mike Reinke, and Scott Biertzer followed in the 35 minute, 25 lap event. The last race of the night would see the WISSOTA Modifieds battle for 20 laps. Justin Jones would gain a small advantage over pole sitter Chuck Cooper at the drop of the green flag. Shawn Nolan then shot from third to the lead with an awesome slide job of the higher running top two. Jones found a good bite yet again on the high side and powered back to the lead on lap three with Jim Chyba and Cooper all over Nolan for the runner up spot. Chyba claimed the spot with Rick Jacobson and Brain Strand in a dog fight for the fifth position. Caution waved on lap nine for a stalled Danny Vang bunching up the pack. Jacobson used the restart to his advantage by blasting to the very top of the track to take over the runner up spot. Two laps later, Strand was sent spinning into the front stretch wall ending his night as well as that of Ryan Canon and Shawn Fletcher. Jones fired to the lead again on the final restart with Chyba and Jacobson dueling for second. Behind them, the battle was on for fourth with Eric Martini getting the edge over Nolan and Cooper. On the final lap, Jones pulled away for a five car length victory, his first of the season. Chyba and Jacobson got together coming out of turn four. Jacobson crossed the line just ahead of Chyba, but track officials awarded Chyba with the runner up spot as Jacobson was called for causing the contact putting him back to third. Erick Thiesse finished in 11th place, but played a very large part in deciding the outcome of the event. Thiesse pushed the stalled car of Jacobsons’ onto the track from the staging area when the car would not fire on it’s own, showing true class and sportsmanship.
